Session Description

Knowledge translation is a buzzword that has been discussed for many years in clinical practice and research. We know that knowledge translation– getting evidence into practice–matters to improve the care of older adults. We also know that knowledge translation can be challenging work and that it requires tenacity to move evidence into practice within complex clinical environments. This workshop focuses on the who, what, when, where, why, and how of knowledge translation to support practice change. We will use this opportunity to network and collaborate with one another to derive creative solutions to our shared challenges with practice change.

Objectives

  1. Apply core concepts related to the practice of knowledge translation within clinical settings.
  2. Discuss diverse strategies (e.g., infographics, arts-based, social media) and target audiences to share information and support practice change.
  3. Build networks to support practice change efforts in the care of older adults.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this workshop, participants will have a better understanding of the following:

  1. Important concepts that can help with the practice of knowledge translation.
  2. Which individuals or groups to target when planning to translate knowledge within their own practice setting.
  3. How to connect with others to move practice change forward.

Workshop Format

In this workshop, there will be presentations from panelists, opportunities to build your network, and exercises to develop relevant messages for a variety of audiences. The workshop will include:

  • An introduction to knowledge translation concepts
  • Small group activity to create a message for a target audience using different mediums
  • Networking and refreshment break
  • Panel discussion with Q & A to share diverse perspectives of knowledge translation practice
  • Individualized reflection to identify appropriate audiences and networks to access during future knowledge translation activities
