Session Description

There is at times, a reluctance to err on the side of risk aversion and safety when developing care plans and interventions with clients.  We want to make sure that people get the best care and in that pursuit, it can result in situations where client’s choices are overlooked or not considered.  


I will lead you through a discussion and ethical decision making process today that will provide you with tools to have these discussions with your clients, teams and colleagues that places client’s goals at the heart of care planning. 

Objectives

  1. Understand the importance of promoting and respecting client choices in healthcare decision-making; 
  2. Identify common ethical issues that can arise when healthcare professionals and clients have different goals of care; 
  3. Describe strategies to mitigate risk and develop care plans that support client choices;
  4. Demonstrate use of an ethical decision-making toolkit to facilitate this process.

Learning Outcomes

At the end of this workshop, participants will:

  1. Use a client-centered framework in their practice;
  2. Implement outlined strategies in client interactions;
  3. Advocate for client choices in team settings with colleagues;

Workshop Format

The workshop is interactive and draws on health care provider’s experiences in balancing risk and autonomy in their practices.
